3 Ways to Rid Yourself of Negative Energy

By Allie O.

Negative energy is a natural part of existence. Light and shadows, positives and negatives- these exist in a delicate balance all around us. Sometimes, however, that delicate balance is disturbed, creating an overwhelming amount of negative energy that is harboured within our auras and cells.

Thankfully, there are many methods in which one can temporarily rid themselves of negative energy and restore the body and soul to their proper balance. In this blog I will be covering three ways that have best worked for me.

1. Meditation on Twin Hearts

This guided meditation is one of the most beautiful and effective for removing trapped energy. Meditation on Twin Hearts is a practice created by Grand-master Choa Kok Sui and maintained by thousands of followers, most notable being Master Stephen Co. The meditation typically goes as following:

a. light exercise to loosen stuck energy
b. prayers to the divine god-power within and around us
c. a cultivation of happy thoughts, blessings to Mother Earth
d. chanting
e. giving of thanks to the divine energy
g. light exercise to get the pranic or sacred energy flowing so that it does not become stuck.

Too much positive energy is just as detrimental and exhausting to the human form as its counterpart, which is why Meditation on Twin Hearts is a great meditation for removing negative energy, immersing oneself in healing energy, and stabilising the energy so that the body feels rested and revitalised.

My personal favourite recording is this one. It is intense, cleansing, and has the Grandmaster himself, who passed away nearly ten years ago, giving the meditation. I like to have a large bowl of salt water nearby as I listen, to absorb the energy as it's being released so that it does not re-enter the body upon being cleansed.

2. Tara Brach

What's great about Tara Brach, a western Buddhist teacher, is that she has a huge variety of meditations and podcasts on her website. There is a guided meditation for everyone, ranging from short, 1 minute meditations to longer, more extensive ones. Her meditations each serve unique purposes, so you can find one that best works for you.

Tara Brach's meditations serve a different function from that of The Meditation on Twin Hearts. The Buddhist nature of the meditations are set on grounding the listener so that one can become more present. I listen to her meditations when my thoughts are spinning round in negative or obsessive loops because I know I am not really present if I am wasting all of my energy on bad habits. She takes listeners on a journey through the body and breath, encouraging us to pay attention to what's really going on in our bodies.

The human mind is constantly on the go, and it is important to remind it to take time to pause and slow down. We are not, after all, merely minds, but rather combinations of mind, body, emotions, and spirit. This reminder connects all four aspects, allowing us to feel our emotions without judgement, to relax without tension, and to think not of arbitrary stimuli but real, conscious awareness, which in turn allows our spirit to elevate to higher levels. The end result is one of grounded awareness.

One of my favourite Tara Brach meditations can be found here.

3. Essential Oils and Salt

There are many different kinds of essential oils that can help get rid of negative energy. Of the many options, my top contenders are lavender and peppermint.

Lavender is a popular choice because it is recognised by the brain as extremely relaxing. According to an experiment conducted by the National Center of Biotechnology Information, lavender significantly decreases one's blood pressure, heart rate, and skin temperature. The subjects in the experiment said they felt more active and recharged compared to the subjects who only inhaled base oil. Thus, lavender extract encourages the body to relax, which reduces unwanted negative energy.

Likewise, the National Center of Biotechnology Information conducted experiments to study the effects of peppermint extract and came to find that it both "[improves] tasks related to attentional processes, virtual recognition memory, working memory, and visual-motor response" and improves lung capacity and inhalation ability. This ability to breathe more easily allows one to subconsciously enter a more relaxed state of mind, thus discouraging negative energy whilst encouraging peaceful, positive energy.

Salt has been said to generate negative ionisation, as well as to attract water molecules from the air, cleansing them out and releasing them. For this reason, I pour two generous cups of salt into a large bowl and activate it by adding water when doing the above meditation practices. Since salt is hygroscopic and absorbs the negative energy of water molecules, and the average human is 50-65% water, this aids in the process of eliminating negative energy within some of those molecules.

To increase the effectiveness of both salt and lavender, taking a salt bath with lavender oil is my immediate go-to when I feel overcome with negative energy. Salt's natural ability to extract negative, dirty energy, and lavender's ability to calm the sympathetic nervous system are the perfect ingredients for getting rid of negative energy. I place 3 large cups of salt crystals, which I get for cheap at Lowe's Home Improvement store, in the bath with 7 drops of lavender, soak for no more than 20 minutes, and emerge new and refreshed.

An Overview

There are thousands of meditations and techniques that can assist in the removal of negative energy, which can be overwhelming when you're already feeling trapped by negative energy. By selecting three that best work for me, I hope my sharing of these blessings aids others in their quest to form healthy, life-changing habits.
