Human Design Type: Manifesting Generator

One of the 4 types in Human Design that is often mistakenly classified in its own category is the Generator with a motorized throat. These Manifesting Generators (MGs) make up around 33% of the population and are a huge part of the Sacral community that keeps humanity running. This design subtype is here to respond and thus initiate numerous projects but tends not to stick around for the completion. With their ability to initiate these many projects, and their ability to energetically work at what they love, MGs are here to create what they’re passionate about.
Many literary sources online refer to Manifesting Generators as a Generator/Manifestor hybrid; however, MGs are Generators who must, like all Generators, listen to their inner authority (emotional or Sacral) and outer authority (yes/no response) to make decisions. For this reason, it is important to keep in mind that, while some Manifesting Generators have elements in their charts that are characteristic to Manifestors, they still operate as Generators.
In this blog post I’m going to be covering a lot of information on the different ways in which Manifesting Generators operate. The first section covers general information on MGs, while the second half branches off to a more-detailed look at Manifesting Generator variations.

Following Your Authority

Like Generators, Manifesting Generators can either have one of two authorities: Sacral or Emotional. Below I will discuss the ways in which these two authorities differ.
Emotional Authority
Emotional Authority Manifesting Generators have the Solar Plexus defined in their charts. Also called the emotional center, the Solar Plexus center is full of emotional highs and emotional lows. This emotional wave is normal for the emotionally defined. The key to listening to your authority, if your emotional center is defined, is to make decisions after experiencing the highs and lows. If you make a decision when experiencing an intense emotion, it might backfire or turn out to have been temporary and based on the emotion, rather than your true correctness.
Emotional beings often feel indecisive about making decisions because of the many emotions that are at play. It’s okay to feel your emotions. In fact, it is a healthy way of accepting the emotions. By allowing the emotions to pass through you, the emotional center comes to clarity. Once you have emotional clarity, your sacral yes/no response can be trusted as a reliable source for decision-making.
Sacral Authority
Sacral Authority Manifesting Generators operate differently from Solar Plexus Authority Manifesting Generators. Someone with Sacral Authority makes decisions based solely on whether their Sacral Center responds with a yes or a no. Often described as an “uh huh” for “yes” and an “un uh” for “no,” those with Sacral Authorities are here to respond to yes/no questions.
Open-ended questions often don’t generate yes/no responses, so if you’re having a hard time making a decision, either ask yourself yes/no questions to help get that yes/no response, or ask the person asking the open-ended question if they could rephrase it.

Not-Self Theme: Frustration

Manifesting Generators who do not follow their authorities will experience frustration and anger when things don’t go according to plan. First and foremost…
Don’t Listen to the Mind!
Those who try to operate using the mind will find themselves making decisions that go against their gut or emotions. A good example is a classic example of money vs passion:
An Emotional Manifesting Generator with a passion for art thinks they won’t make money from that pathway and chooses instead to be a doctor. In the end, the MG will feel frustrated and angry because they listened to their mind calculation of monetary value rather than their emotional authority.

Signature: Satisfaction

By following your strategy as a Manifesting Generator, you will experience the signature of satisfaction. Make decisions according to your authority, listen to your yes/no response, and avoid using the mind to make decisions, and you will find your inner truths and pathway to a satisfying life.

The Three Subtypes of Manifesting Generators

A topic of possible controversy is that there are three subtypes to Manifesting Generators. But before we go into it, I’d like to clarify that the terms pure, indirect, and potential have nothing to do with the greatness of one’s design. The word ‘pure,’ in of itself is a tricky word that often entails a sense of privilege or superiority. I’d like to remove that connotation from this use of the word. “Pure” in Human Design pertains to the directness of the channels involved with the type. Human Design language uses ‘pure’ to discuss the different types and channels, but I would suggest that a better word would be ‘direct,’ due to this underlying association with superiority. Thus, keep in mind as you read that ‘pure’ specifically means ‘direct.’
It is with this that I would like to discuss the three types of Manifesting Generators: Pure Manifesting Generators, Indirect Manifesting Generators, and Generators with Manifesting Potential. All three types are included in the umbrella term “Manifesting Generator,” but I, personally, believe the differences are worth potential reclassification.
Pure Manifesting Generators
Pure Manifesting Generators have their sacral directly connected to the throat center through the Channel of Charisma, power channel 34-20. This channel, as suggested, is full of sheer power and expression of that power. It is the only channel that correlates to the pure Manifesting Generator.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s Human Design Chart
In the chart above, we have Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Human Design. As a pure Manifesting Generator, Dr. King has the channel 34-20 defined. As indicated historically, he was able to inspire peaceful protesting and emit a powerful sense of change via this unique channel. His root connected to the spleen connected to the sacral also adds layers to his design. He was able to articulate pressure for change through his deep intuition, powerful character, and concrete ideas, which all worked together to be expressed vocally for generations to come.
Indirect Manifesting Generators
Indirect Manifesting Generators also have the sacral connected to the throat, however, they are not directly connected. These Manifesting Generators are unique in that there is an additional layer to the consistent generating that they manifest. Indirect MGs will always have the sacral defined and connected to another center that is connected to the throat. Some will even have an additional center involved before the Sacral indirectly connects to the throat. They will not, however, have gate 34 directly connected to the throat like the Pure Manifesting Generator. There are many possible avenues one’s chart can take, so long as the Sacral ends up connecting to the throat in some way.
We will look into a few examples more closely below:
David Bowie’s Human Design Chart
Above we have the chart of Indirect Manifesting Generator, David Bowie. With 57-34, the channel of power, connected to the throat via the 57-20, channel of the brainwave, Bowie had a chart full of power, intuition, and communication of that powerful intuition.
Damien Chazelle’s Human Design Chart
In the following image, we have French-American director Damien Chazelle’s Human Design chart. As you can see, he has the channel 10-34 defined, which is connected to the throat via channel 1-8. Thus, he has the pure manifesting gate 34 defined and is therefore constant in his ability to manifest through the sacral and identity centers.
Similarly, the sacral might be indirectly connected to the throat via a channel that does not incorporate the Manifesting Generator gate 34. In such cases, the chart is still classified as a Manifesting Generator in traditional Human Design lingo.
Beyonce’s Human Design Chart
As you can see, Beyonce is a Manifesting Generator. Her manifesting abilities, however, come from the Channel of Rhythm, 5-15, and its connection to the throat through the Channel of Inspiration, 8-1. Therefore, the ways in which she manifests her sacral energy are through an innate sense of timing, and a deep need for self expression.
Generators with Manifesting Potential
The third type of Manifesting Generator is what I like to call Generators with Manifesting Potential, or GMs for short. This subtype has the ability to initiate small projects through Manifesting channels, like Manifestors, but also has the Sacral defined, which classes them as Manifesting Generators in traditional HD lingo. Despite having Manifestor channel definition, the Sacral is their ultimate outer strategy,
There are 3 pure manifesting channels that a Manifesting Generator of this subset can have. There are also a few channels stemming from the root center and ego that, if indirectly connected to the throat, operate in a Manifestor fashion. All of these avenues must not have a channel linking them to the Sacral center in order to be a GM. For this reason, only Split Definitions can have this chart.
Generators with manifesting potential do not have the Sacral directly or indirectly connected to the throat and thus have a different way of vocalizing themselves than those who do. They have constant, Sacral energy, but that energy is not fueling their ability to manifest. If you have the Sacral defined but not connected to the throat in some way, you might find your ability to manifest projects is not a limitless source of energy like the work that you do. Your manifesting abilities are, in a sense, separate from your generator work input.
Let’s have a closer look.
Sigmud Freud’s Human Design Chart
In Sigmud Freud’s Rave Chart, we see his Sacral is defined, but it is in no way connected to the throat. Instead, Freud’s Solar Plexus is directly connected to the throat via the manifesting channel of openness, 12/22. For this reason, Freud does not have constant energy for manifestation. Like any channel originating from the Solar Plexus, channel 12/22 has emotional waves leading to periods of low energy, medium energy, and high energy.
Vincent van Gogh’s Human Design Chart
Vincent Van Gogh, like Freud, has a defined Sacral but no pathway for the Sacral center to consistently vocalize itself. It is through the pure manifesting Channel of Money, 21-45, that van Gogh is able to manifest. Depending on the needs of the tribe, van Gogh is able to initiate, lead, and manage financial resources. The Channel of Rhythms, channel 5-15, is defined in his chart, but it operates separately from this, generating consistent time management and correctness.

In Conclusion…

Perhaps it is the wordiness and complexity which has led to the merging of all the unique combinations of Manifesting Generator beings. I have spent many years trying to find a way to make Human Design more simplistic to explain, but this is truly a rabbit hole of a system that leads those interested in the experiment down a pathway of more and more questions and seemingly few answers. Thus, I hope that my breakdown of the murky territories of Human Design helps others on their journeys, rather than generates more questions.
